Popcaan Enstooled as Chief in Ghana’s Asebu Traditional Area

Jamaican dancehall artist Popcaan, whose real name is Andrae Hugh Edwards, was honored Wednesday as Nana Arkoh Kese I and Aboafohen—meaning ‘chief helper’—of the Apagyahen Division in Ghana’s Central Region. The title recognizes contributions to community development, following his recent visit to Cape Coast Castle to honor ancestors. While fans celebrated the cultural reconnection, some questioned Popcaan’s ties to Asebu and whether such honors dilute traditions, with defenders noting these are development chief roles.
